I knew it was coming but it didn't ease the pain, at least not anymore than the practice in which the assignment was meant to force. You see the first assignment of my year long project is "Portrait of a Stranger" and all the people I don't know but hire me to make their protrait don't count. For this I had to go out and find myself a stranger to photograph, and for those of you that know me at all, this quiet, reserved, even socially distant guy that is more than willing to hide behind his camera was more than just a little out of his comfort zone. But it made snese the first time I heard it and I've seen it proven true on several occasions - That's [outside our comfort zone] where the magic happens. There's no studio magic here, everything happened in just a couple minutes, only a single light turned way down to reduce the shadows, but there was a hint of magic in asking this young man if I could shoot him, while he told me what he was fishing for and how his day had gone so far.
